Electrolux Freezer: Safe Defrosting Procedures

Electrolux freezer: safe defrosting procedures — read this important safety alert for full details and affected models.

Excessive frost buildup in an Electrolux freezer reduces cooling efficiency and can indicate a defrost system failure. While modern Electrolux freezers include automatic defrost systems, manual defrosting may be needed if the defrost system fails or if the freezer has been running with a compromised door seal.

Safe Manual Defrosting

  • Transfer all food to a cooler with ice packs before beginning
  • Unplug the freezer — never chip ice with sharp objects while the unit is powered on
  • Place towels around the base to catch meltwater
  • Allow ice to melt naturally or place a pan of hot water inside to speed the process — never use a hair dryer, heat gun, or any open flame
  • Do not use a knife, screwdriver, or metal tool to chip or pry ice — you can puncture the evaporator coil, causing an irreparable refrigerant leak
  • Once defrosted, wipe the interior dry and plug the freezer back in

When Frost Indicates a Problem

Error code dH (defrost heater fault) on Electrolux freezers means the automatic defrost system has failed. Repeated frost buildup after manual defrosting indicates the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer needs replacement. A worn door gasket that allows warm air intrusion will also cause rapid frost accumulation on the evaporator coils. Have both the defrost system and door seal inspected professionally.
