Electrolux refrigerator: door alarm and temperature monitoring — read this important safety alert for full details and affected models.
The door alarm on Electrolux refrigerators is a food safety feature, not a nuisance — ignoring it puts perishable food at risk of bacterial growth. When the OP (door open) alarm sounds or the HI temperature alert activates, prompt action is required.
Door Alarm (OP Code)
The door alarm sounds when the refrigerator or freezer door has been open for more than 2 minutes. Close the door firmly and verify it seals completely. If the alarm continues with the door closed, the door switch may be faulty or the gasket is not creating a proper seal. A refrigerator door left ajar overnight can raise the internal temperature enough to spoil all perishable contents.
High Temperature Alert (HI Code)
The HI alert indicates the internal temperature has risen above the safe threshold. This can be triggered by a door left open, a cooling system fault (SY EF or SY CF), heavy loading of warm food, or a power outage. Check the door seal, verify the condenser coils are not blocked, and monitor the temperature for recovery over the next 2–4 hours. If the temperature does not recover, the cooling system needs professional service.
Monitoring Best Practices
- Do not disable or ignore the door alarm — it exists to protect your food
- Keep an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator as a backup temperature reference
- The fresh food section should read 37°F (3°C) and the freezer should read 0°F (-18°C)
- If the SB (standby) code appears, the refrigerator may be in demo mode — press and hold the temperature button for 5 seconds to exit
