Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. The washer cannot complete any cycle without draining. Attempting to run the machine with a drain fault can cause water overflow, excess weight on the drum bearings, and potential flooding. Clear the drain issue before using the washer.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. E20 can be cleared by pressing Start/Pause for 3 seconds or unplugging the washer for 60 seconds. The code will return when the next drain cycle fails if the blockage is not removed.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: The drain pump makes no sound at all when a drain cycle is initiated, Water backs up through the standpipe or onto the floor during drain attempts.

Symptoms You May Notice

Water remains in the drum after a cycle ends

The wash cycle completes or pauses, but water is visibly pooled inside the drum when the door is opened. Clothes are soaking wet and heavy.

E20 error code appears during the drain phase

The display shows E20 during the transition between wash and spin phases, or at the end of the cycle when the final drain is attempted.

Drain pump hums but water does not exit

You can hear the drain pump motor running — a low humming or buzzing sound from the bottom of the machine — but water is not being expelled through the drain hose.

Clothes come out excessively wet

Because the washer cannot drain properly before the spin cycle, clothes remain waterlogged even after the cycle attempts to finish, and may drip heavily when removed.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain pump filter

Coins, buttons, hair pins, lint, and small fabric items have accumulated in the drain pump filter housing, blocking water from reaching the pump impeller and flowing out through the drain hose.

2

Kinked or clogged drain hose

The drain hose between the washer and the standpipe or laundry sink is kinked, compressed against the wall, or internally clogged with lint and detergent residue buildup.

3

Failed drain pump motor

The drain pump motor windings have burned out or the impeller is physically broken, preventing the pump from generating enough force to expel water from the drum through the drain hose.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the drain pump filter

Open the small access panel at the bottom-front of the washer. Place a shallow baking pan and towels beneath the filter cap. Slowly turn the filter cap counterclockwise — water will begin to flow out. Once drained, fully remove the filter, clear all debris, and check inside the pump cavity for objects blocking the impeller.

On Electrolux ELFW and EFLS models, the filter cap has a small emergency drain hose next to it — pull it out and open the cap to drain water more slowly and with less mess.

  2. 2

Inspect the drain hose and standpipe

Pull the washer away from the wall and check the drain hose for kinks or tight bends. Disconnect the hose from the standpipe and look for lint buildup at the connection. Pour water into the standpipe to confirm it drains freely.

The drain hose should be inserted 6 to 8 inches into the standpipe — pushing it too far in can create a siphon or seal that prevents proper drainage.

  3. 3

Test with a drain and spin cycle

Reinstall the filter, close the access panel, and select the Drain & Spin cycle on the control panel. Listen for the drain pump to activate and verify that water exits through the drain hose into the standpipe within 30 seconds.

If you can hear the pump running but feel no water coming through the drain hose, the impeller inside the pump may be broken — it spins freely without moving water.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • The drain pump impeller spins freely by hand but does not move water, indicating broken impeller blades
  • The pump motor draws excessive current or trips the circuit breaker when activated
  • The control board shows additional error codes alongside E20, suggesting a wiring or board-level fault
