Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. EF5 is a protective code and the washer is safe to use after redistributing the load. If the issue recurs with every load despite proper loading and leveling, the suspension components should be inspected, but the washer remains safe to use at reduced spin speeds.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. EF5 clears automatically when the load is redistributed and the spin cycle is restarted. You can also press Start/Pause to restart the spin phase. No power cycle is needed for this code.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: The washer produces loud metallic banging during spin even with small, balanced loads, The machine walks or moves across the floor during every spin cycle despite being level.

Symptoms You May Notice

Washer stops spinning or reduces speed during the spin cycle

The drum slows down significantly or stops completely during what should be the high-speed spin phase, and the control panel displays EF5.

Excessive vibration and banging during spin

The washer shakes, walks, or produces loud banging and thumping sounds during the spin cycle as the unbalanced load causes the drum to oscillate heavily.

Clothes come out wetter than normal

Because the spin cycle was interrupted or ran at reduced speed, clothes retain significantly more water than they would after a complete high-speed spin.

Washer attempts to redistribute the load by tumbling

Before displaying EF5, the Electrolux washer may attempt to redistribute the load by slowly tumbling the drum back and forth several times. If redistribution fails, EF5 appears.

Possible Causes

1

Uneven or bulky load distribution

A single heavy item or a load bunched on one side of the drum creates a weight imbalance that causes excessive vibration when the drum reaches high spin speeds.

DIY Possible
2

Washer not properly leveled

The washer is not level or one or more leveling feet are not firmly on the floor, allowing the machine to rock during spin and amplifying normal vibration into imbalance detection.

DIY Possible
3

Worn shock absorbers or suspension springs

The shock absorbers that dampen drum movement have worn out or a suspension spring has broken, allowing the drum to swing excessively during spin cycles even with balanced loads.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Redistribute the load

Open the door and spread the laundry evenly around the drum. Separate any items that have tangled together or bunched on one side. If washing a single large item, add two or three towels to create a more balanced weight distribution.

Washing sheets and towels together is a common cause of EF5 — sheets wrap around towels creating a heavy, lopsided bundle. Wash sheets separately or in smaller batches.

  2. 2

    Level the washer

Place a spirit level on top of the washer front-to-back and side-to-side. Adjust the front leveling feet by turning them clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower. Tighten the lock nuts. Push the washer on each corner — it should not rock.

The rear legs on most Electrolux front-loaders are self-leveling — tilt the washer forward about 4 inches and set it back down to allow them to adjust automatically.

    Tools required
  3. 3

    Run a test spin cycle

With the load redistributed and the washer level, select a Drain & Spin or Rinse & Spin cycle. Observe the washer through the entire spin ramp-up. Moderate vibration is normal, but the machine should not walk, bang, or shake excessively.

If EF5 recurs with a small, balanced load and the washer is level, push down on each corner of the washer while it is off — if the drum bounces excessively, the shock absorbers are likely worn.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • The shock absorbers show oil leakage or compress and extend without resistance when tested by hand
  • A suspension spring is visibly broken or detached from its mounting point
  • The drum bearings produce a loud rumbling or growling sound during spin, indicating bearing wear in addition to suspension issues
